For the men: Three things you need to know about getting a men’s spa treatment

Posted on Mon October 16, 2017.

1. The stigma is long gone. Manscape and MANicure away!

There was a time where the word “grooming” was taboo in the vocabulary of a 'real man'. A time when the spa was associated with dozens of pink fingernails covering eager gossiping mouths in a bright room filled with scented candles and Enya. That time is over.

It is now common knowledge that men’s spa treatments are not the same as women’s. Spas go out of their way to create a completely different atmosphere for men. The types of essential oils, treatments, the processes and even the scents are different (think peppermint and sandalwood instead of [insert flower name here]). The male spa experience is designed to take the concerns and worries that men usually have about spas, and turn it into relaxing and beneficial treatment packages.

In 2005 the International SPA Association, or ISPA, in partnership with PricewaterhouseCoopers, found that 29 percent of spa-goers were male. Today we are looking at numbers closer to 50 percent. This surge in interest is largely thanks to the changing attitudes of today's men toward grooming. The progressive gentlemen that get face and body treatments are part of a niche but thriving community. They realise that taking care of yourself is more than just sticking a cucumber on your face.

Spas that specifically cater for men are popping up all over the world and in places like Los Angeles, New York, and Miami – the man spas can’t keep up with demand. Men everywhere are seeing the benefits of spa treatments – not just on a personal level, but on a professional level too.

2. It’s a great way to relieve stress, allowing you to stay on top of your game

We don’t always realise how noticeable stress can be in the way we look and act. Sometimes you can see stress in someone’s face, or tension in their shoulders and you know they aren’t taking care of themselves. This isn’t good for business or professional relationships and whether you’re a sports guy or a businessman, you’ll probably know how important it is to make a good impression in a professional environment.

The entire spa experience is built around stress relief. From facials to deep-tissue massages – no matter what you choose, your professional technician will ensure that the process is relaxing and revitalising. Expect a thorough assessment by a trained professional, warm towels on your face, gentle steam to open up the pores in your face and strong, skilled hands working out all those knots in your back. All of this in a tranquil relaxing environment. Okay... there might be some Enya. But you can learn to love it.
